'Dormánd church', 2021, oil on canvas, 2 panels, each 76.2x76.2cm.
This is a diptych based on little Instamatic snapshots my Mum took, when she was on holiday at fourteen, of the church in the village in Hungary (Dormánd) where her father came from, and which he had to flee, along with his siblings and parents, during the Second World War.
She couldn’t get far enough away from the church to photograph it in one go. This disjointed picture seemed to me an appropriate image of a family history riven by war and forced migration, and one which, without the benefit of much in the way of physical or written archives is reliant on unreliable oral histories.
